Peter’s Love Life [Reading]

A reading from a person who tried out the app named Peter.

It had been a few months since I last saw my friend Peter. When I told him about the app he was curious, so I had him give it a test run before downloading it onto his phone.

Peter wanted to take a look into his love life, but didn’t enter a question; he wanted to keep it to himself.

READING

Question: (Contemplated)
Category: Love and Relationships
Method: Three Coins

h46

First Hexagram: 46 – Sheng – Ascending
Changing Lines: #5

Be confident that you have a strong relationship with your lover. Continually nourish it with great patience and it will grow even stronger.

During our conversation, Peter hadn’t mentioned if he was seeing anyone. For all I knew he was still single. Nevertheless, according to his first hexagram, he might be or there is someone he is interested in. Assuming that he’s still single, the advice of the oracle is that he needs to be patient with the other person. As they continue to talk and spend time with each other, their bond will grow stronger. But, if Peter gets desperate and pushes the idea of a “relationship”, the other person might sense the desperation or the urgency and it would be in Peter’s disfavor. In essence, the other person would be “turned off”.

You are successful, but there are a few goals that you need to achieve. Focus on the remaining goals one at a time.

With the addition of changing line number five, it further advises that the idea of having a relationship at this time should not be his goal. Peter is rather “established”. Meaning to say that he has a good career, friends, family and hobbies that he enjoys; other areas of his life are going rather well. The “other goals” that were mentioned could be centered around himself. Maybe there is another hobby or interest that he would like to take up? Maybe he wants to start a new business venture? Sometimes, when you take your mind off of an goal or an idea that you’ve thought about for a long time, it manifests while you stop thinking about it.

h48

Result Hexagram: 48 – Jing – Welling

You need to focus on your own need before you can address those of your lover or of the relationship.

It looks like for the next few weeks, he should focus on himself. Is the oracle saying the he’s not “ready”? I would say, “yes”. Maybe he needs to assess his reasons for having a relationship.

One common idea for having a relationship is the idea to complete one’s life. I’ve often heard that people are “looking for their other half” or “someone to complete them”. It comes from Plato’s Symposium.People were of both sexes and had four arms and four legs, etc. They conspired to climb to heaven, so Zeus split man to weaken him and double the offerings they received, instead of destroying man. Good call: double or nothing.

That idea has put the believer in constant search of something outside them and fills them up with expectations, sometimes unmet and unmanaged. And, sadly what often happens is that they find that the “other half” no longer “completes” them, so they seek another or try to change the other person. There are a whole slew of bad “things” that can result as well.

A better approach is to believe you are whole to begin with and search for another whole. It might not be easy to think or believe, especially since the media prefers to market the “I’m not whole” idea, but it’s possible. If you can feel good about yourself and enjoy yourself BY YOURSELF, then you’re thinking more towards a person who feels 100% and whole. I’d rather be 100% looking for another 100% to create 200%, than 50% trying to find another 50% to create 100%.

Reading–Dating

The following is another reading that was submitted by a current app user, “Wilma”. Below is her reading.

feature_thumb

READING

Question: What can I expect dating Sean?
Like in a previous reading she stayed away from expecting a “yes” or a “no”. This question has a positive spin, and I’m quite sure that there was another question such as “What can I expect dating other people?”

Category: Love and Relationships
Very appropriate category.

Method: Toss Three Coins
Wilma decided to take a chance and give the three-coin method a try.

The following are the hexagrams that resulted related to Wilma’s concerns.

First Hexagram: 34 – Da Zhuang – Great Invigorating
Changing Lines: none
This is the current situation and because there are no changing lines, it will continue for at least the next few weeks.

Sometimes there are no changing lines in a reading. Whether it’s good all depends on the situation. If it’s a favorable situation, then it great to know that it will continue. But, if not, you have the power to start thinking how you can change it. In this case with Wilma’s love life, the single hexagram is probably something she welcomes… Or, not.

h34

Summary: Da Zhuang indicates power. In love and relationships this means the querent, the person asking the question, has a certain power over others. Since Wilma’s asking about Sean, she must have some power over her. In other words, Sean is very attracted to Wilma and it looks like this will be the case for many weeks to come.

Although I don’t have much background about the reasons why Wilma asked this question, this can be interpreted in a few ways.

First of all, if Wilma is interested in Sean, then the appearance of a non-changing Da Zhuang is a very good thing. They can begin building a relationship.

Second, Wilma might just be curious. Who knows? She could be dating other women and Sean just happens to be one that came to mind. With this outcome, she can rest assured that Sean might feel the same.

But, with power come responsibility. She should use her power over Sean wisely and should not be selfish and abuse that power over the other woman taking advantage of the other’s possible infatuation.

Reading–Raise?

The following is a reading that was submitted by a current app user. Out of respect for privacy the user wanted to be referred to as “Wilma”. Below is her reading.

feature

READING

Question: What can I expect regarding my salary increase this year?
Wilma decided to stay away from asking a “yes/no” question and thought out a nice one sentence question. It’s short. It’s succinct. It’s to the point.

What’s nice about her question is that she is expecting a positive outcome, so she’s setting herself up for a raise and will most likely get one.

Category: General
Although she could have chosen “Work and Career” or “Money and Finances”, she chose “General”. It’s an interesting choice, but she felt that it would have a wider impact on her life than just in one area.

Method: Split the Yarrow Stalks
Wilma chose to use the yarrow. She felt that it produced applicable readings.

The following are the hexagrams that resulted related to Wilma’s concerns.

First Hexagram: 18 – Gu – Corrupting
Changing Lines: #1, #5
Represents the current situation.h18

Summary: It appears that Wilma’s current situation is affected by limited resources at her company. Someone in the company or organization that Wilma is working for is withholding. It can be for many reasons, but it’s not because of Wilma’s performance. It could be the economy or that there is a smaller number of clients compared to previous years or quarters.

The character for this hexagram, Gu, is the image of grubs in a dish of food. When insect grubs are present, the food has been spoiled or spoiling. It is an image of decay. People in the company might be favoring some at the expense of not giving her a raise because they might see them as “more valuable”.

So, there is a possibility that someone within the company is reluctant to increase Wilma’s salary out of greed. Wilma will have to find out if this is the case. And, if there is some indication of this, she will have to find others who can help her.

Changing line #1 adds that the root cause might be because the company or organization that she works for continues to follow the same practices that were profitable in the past. But, the times have changed. The company refuses to look within and would rather attribute their losses to outside causes.

Or, it could indicate that Wilma herself, needs to change. She might need to look for a different company to work for or find a way within the company to become a more valuable asset.

Changing line #5 states that with support Wilma might be able to change the practices of the company. It will be small number of those who agree with her, but after some time, many more will follow her lead.

First Change: 26 – Da Chu – Great Accumulating
Changing Lines: #5
Represents a situation that Wilma can expect within the week.

h26

Summary: Wilma will start to gain more resources. This might be the “raise”. But, it might be connections or other clients that she can work with. She should find others for support and guidance. During this time, she should make sure to reward and thank those who have helped her.

Progress is still slow, however. She still needs to confront the company, but in an indirect manner as is suggested by line #5. Again, she might find allies at work to help her get a raise, not just for herself, but for others in the same situation.

Result: 9 – Xiao Chu – Small Accumulating
Represents the result that she can expect around the fifth week out.h09

Summary: It is the details that need work. Wilma might need to pay attention to them more. One of those “little things” is actually now more of a hindrance or a block than an annoyance that she might have thought it was previously. She might have ignored it, but it’s come back to bite her on the butt.

I’m sure the Wilma might know what it is or after some advice, she will find out, do what is necessary to “correct” it and then she will see her goal. She knows what the “big picture” is, so she just has to break it down into smaller steps and follow that plan before she sees what she wants.

Reading - Masters Program

This post will be part of a series of readings using The YiJing Oracle.

For the first reading, I've asked a question about a masters' program that I applied to recently. I received notice a couple of weeks ago that I was put on the waiting list. I'd like to find out what can I expect regarding my acceptance into the program.

READING

Question: Masters, Comp Ling, 2013
Notice that I decided not to phrase a question per se. Instead, I opted to use a few words about my concerns.

Category: Work and Career
Since getting into the program would improve my chances at a good paying position, I chose "Work and Career" as my category.

Method: Split the Yarrow Stalks
I chose "Split the Yarrow Stalks" because I've received good results in the past. I have yarrow stalks at home and I've split and counted them as detailed in the app.

The following are the hexagrams that resulted related to my concerns.

First Hexagram: 28 – Da Guo - Great Exceeding
Changing Lines: #1, #4
Represents the current situation

h28

Summary: After reading the text for this hexagram, I’ve noticed it’s one of the longer texts that I’ve come across in the program. But, it’s only two-paragraphs long.

It mentions that I don’t have control over the situation as it is now. It is correct in that respect because I’m considered for the program, but they just don’t have a space for me. The text also mentions…

“…You may need to get away...and no longer be involved…”

So, is it saying that I should forget about it? Or, that I should look elsewhere for the same degree? I only applied for the one at the University of Washington, but I do remember seeing other universities offer the same degree. It does give me food for thought. If I really want to get the degree, but can’t get into the UW, then I know I can apply elsewhere. Why put all my eggs in this one basket?

Should I just stop thinking or worrying about it? To date I haven’t “worried” because I know that I’m in. It’s just that I’m not “officially in”. A saying comes to mind when I think of this, “Let go and let God.”

Changing line 1 says to plan carefully even with the “chaos” around me. Since changing lines can override the main text, I’ve understood this to mean that I should plan regardless – I have a good chance at getting in. That’s nice to know.

Each of the texts for Da Guo emphasizes the need to seek help and support from others. That raises a few questions. What do I need help with? How can someone else assist me in getting in? Or, does it mean that I’ll be in shortly and once in, that’s when I’ll need help?

This is why I like the YiJing. Although it might not give you direct answers, it will give you options and other things to consider. It has made me rethink the original question. Possibly, I can ask if I should look elsewhere for a similar program. A “yes/no” question would have made it feel like I didn’t have a choice.

Second Hexagram: 43 Guai – Parting
Changing Lines: #4
Represents a situation to come about within a week

h43

Summary: Guai represents a breakthrough, a way in or through when obstacles are in your path. The title “Parting” alludes to this – Those things in your way step aside to let you through. This opportunity results because of someone else’s error. The error could be any number of things: A prospective student didn’t get their paperwork done in time, a student changes their mind, etc. But, because it wasn’t my mistake nor did I directly cause the mistake, I shouldn’t feel guilty; I should just take advantage of the fact.

Guai results from changing line 1 in the previous hexagram. As I didn’t explicitly give a time frame, I can assume that this will happen within a week from today. I can expect to be informed that a spot had just opened up for me.

Last Hexagram: 5 Xu – Attending
Resulting situation with a prediction of a month

h05

Summary: This hexagram is about patience, and that all who are patient will be rightfully rewarded just as long as you keep what you want to do or happen in mind. It is one of the shorter texts…

“You will encounter success if you act as it your work project has started…”

In other words, I can expect to either get into the program and that I can look forward to a new career with a masters’ degree in computational linguistics. Or, I might be able to find another program elsewhere in which I can get accepted.

Since this hexagram resulted from line #4, I can expect to see this come about within a month. But, like many things further into the future, this is very much in the “ether” and many things can happen so that this outcome might not come about.

The YiJing Oracle

What is the YiJing?

As I mentioned in a previous entry, I Ching or YiJing, I’d present the Android app that I have been working on for the past few months. Click the link above to learn more about the kind of fortune telling or divination the app deals with.

Goals

Several years ago I was inspired to create an app dealing with the YiJing after learning how to use it. There were several things I wanted to accomplish with the app to make the YiJing easier and more accessible, yet insightful, to the uninitiated.

  • Make casting the lines easier, quicker and more convenient. Although casting the lines using three coins is the quickest and most convenient, splitting the yarrow is the older of the two. I enjoy the time I spend counting and splitting the stalks, but it would take more than 10 minutes to cast all the lines. In addition, if you were not careful you could miss a stalk or two and it would throw off a reading and you would have to either restart or try to see where you made a mistake.
The app eliminates any miscounts or other mistakes that can be made when manipulating coins or stalks. The user just chooses a method, taps the screen to get their “input” into the reading, and a hexagram results all within a very short period of time. But, an option exists in the app where the user can input the values of lines they cast after tossing coins or splitting yarrow stalks or some other method that the find useful. At that point, the app becomes more of a log of readings.
  • Faithfully emulate the two most popular methods. In order to make casting lines convenient, it behooved me to emulate the probabilities of both the three-coin method and the yarrow-stalk method. If the app were to be compared to a real-world reading, it would produce similar results.
I researched statistics and found others’ finding on the probabilities of the methods, especially the probabilities for the yarrow-stalk method. This way whether the user chose to use the yarrow-stalk or the three-coin method, they would cast lines in a way that was similar to both, but quicker and more convenient.
  • Make hexagram look-up quicker. The method I use when consulting the YiJing differs from the usual way of consulting the YiJing. Normally, if there are changing lines in your first hexagram, you change them all to produce a result hexagram. In his book The I Ching Handbook Mondo Secter proposes that only the first changing line is flipped to produce a “transitional” hexagram. And then, from that hexagram its first changing line is “changed” or “flipped” or turned into its opposite value. The process repeats with each subsequent hexagram until there are no more changing lines. Therefore, the maximum number of hexagrams that you would need to look up would be seven: The hexagram that resulted from casting the lines and each hexagram produced from each of the six lines. But, in addition, the texts of the changing lines needed to be considered since the line might completely alter the interpretation of the hexagram. That is a lot of texts to look for read and digest just for one question!

  • Once all the lines are cast and a hexagram results that starts the response to your question, the app will already have the sequence of hexagrams, their interpretations and their details, their changing lines and their texts ready.
  • Write more succinct and focused texts. Once I came across a book on the Tarot that had card interpretations for some area of life, such as “relationship”, “money” or “business”. So, I envisioned that something similar for the YiJing could be done. Many of the on-line YiJing applications that I have encountered might have specific interpretations with a focus on “love”, but there were no interpretations for other areas. Even when consulting books for interpretations, you have to sift and read a lot of texts to get an understanding. But, even when you've done the reading, you can get so caught up in just sorting through all that information that you can forget what it is that you asked.

The interpretations in the app have been redacted to keep them short and adapted for a particular category. Nevertheless, some hexagrams intrinsically lend themselves to one of the areas in life and do not need to be adapted. This idea extends to the interpretations of the changing lines as well.

Development

Because The YiJing Oracle is an Android app, it was written in Java using the Android SDK (Android System Development Kit) and the Eclipse IDE (Integrated Development Environment) – I was not familiar with the programming language, the SDK nor the IDE. But, after using them in concert, I’ve grown accustomed to them all and have learned a great deal about the Android platform.Screenshot_2013-02-12-Start

At first, I wrote what would be the “core” or the “heart” of the app in C# (which continues to be my preferred programming language along with .NET being my preferred platform) several years ago with the idea that I could create a Windows desktop application. I had programmed most of the core components and tested them. It was working well, but soon I discovered that it was difficult to “hook” it up with other components. So, I rewrote and re-factored many aspects of the core parts over the past few years.

In June of 2012, I bought a new smartphone. My previous smartphones were Windows Phone-based, but when I bought my new phone, I chose a Samsung Galaxy III. As I explored my new phone and grew accustomed to the latest Android version at that time (4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich), I grew more and more curious about creating an app for it.
At first I was reluctant to write an app because 1) I had never owned an Android-based phone nor had I used one for an extensive period of time; 2) although I was “familiar” with Java, I had never written anything in that programming language; and 3) I was not familiar with the tools needed to write an app for Android.
I can write an entirely new blog entry just on my experiences, so I will leave that for later. I will focus more on this app in this entry instead.

Another App

When you search for “I Ching”, the more common, and older, name of the “YiJing”, Google Play returns a approximate total of 242 Android Apps! After combing the listings many of them that are not related to the YiJing.  A more accurate tally is about 60+ listings (apps). Many of the “legitimate” apps are free of charge and come in a few languages or are multi-lingual. Of the total apps, there are about 10 are for-pay with the least expensive at $0.99 USD and the most expensive for $5 USD.

I’ve installed many of the free apps and “played” with them. Since I’m already familiar with the YiJing, I knew immediately how to use many of the apps. But, the initial screen of one of the apps, did not easily lend itself to easy interpretation; it was I Ching, oracle, book and aid. There was not text nor any other indication of where I could start a reading. After a bit more exploring, I finally understood how to enter a question and consult the app. In my opinion, the thousands of installs each month are because people are curious and it is free. In general, you get what you don’t pay for with many of them. Some of them, should charge because it was written and laid out very well!

Of the paid apps, I have installed only a small handful. They all are well designed and well written.
But, one was not worth buying after using its free version. I Ching by Design in its free version and its paid versions have various problems. First, it does not have an intuitive user interface. I started the app and had no clue as to where to start. After playing around with it, I found out that you must tap Query first and you must enter a question to continue. Secondly, it was also difficult to close. Pressing the device’s Back button gets you nowhere. When I tapped the ? button, I discovered how to gracefully exit the app. The texts are English translations of Helmut Wilhelm’s interpretations. There are 12 reviews of the free app, but most of them are one-star reviews! I would not want to spend any money on this one. I have noted what the issues and hope that my app does not suffer from the same problems I Ching by Design has.

Availability

Beta Testing

As of this writing, the app is available to an exclusive number of people who have volunteered to use (and abuse) the app. During this period, functionality problems, crashes or compatibility issues with various version of Android should arise and be fixed. But, functionality has been very stable and I don’t expect to see any crashes. Texts, however, are being written and rewritten, so problems such as typographical errors and grammatical errors will be reported. Of the categories, “General”, “Love and Relationships” have been written. The categories “Money and Finances” and “Work and Career” are currently being written. I am considering adding another category, “Personal”, before version 1.0 release.
